Bahama recap

School is back in session and everyone is talking about what they did for the summer. Some students traveled and others completed internships. Thanks to the Lagrant Foundation (TLF), I got the best of both worlds when I was selected to intern with The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism (TBMOT) on the first international internship sponsored by TLF.

I have to admit that my work involved covering events at an annual festival, reporting on Independence Day celebrations, a press conference aboard a cruise line and learning more about the islands by hanging out with local Bahamians at block parties, cook outs and beaches.

This four-week internship placed me at offices in Nassau, Bahamas and Plantation, FL. While, in Nassau I worked with the news bureau department for TBMOT. My first assignment was to write a release on the Junkanoo Summer Festival, a cultural festival featuring musical performances, cooking demonstrations, tropical drinks, and games for visitors of all ages. Another assignment brought me to Ft. Charlotte, a historical land mark, then to Arawak Cay, a popular community of restaurants, drink stands and shops right along the beach, to interview Assistant Superintendent Oscar Sands on the new security policies at Junkanoo Summer Festival. The following week, I experienced my first press conference aboard the Norweigan Sky cruise ship for its inagural voyage to The Bahamas.

The office was located right downtown near the famous straw market, Festival Place and blocks of world class shopping, so I definitely took advantage of the sights during my lunch breaks.

My experience would not have been the same if the Wards, a local family originally from Andros, had not extended their home. Each night I was fed a home-cooked Bahamian meal and invited on outings with friends and extended family.

Working at the office in Plantation was an equally enjoyable experience as well. Each day I got to experience a different area of business for The Bahamas, which ranged ranged from sports or vertical markets, the film commission, aviation markets, e-commerce and travel and tourism. I enjoyed learning about the office's corporate partnership and being able to lend ideas to current projects.

One of the most exciting parts of the internship was attending the Independence Gala sponsored by the National Association of The Bahamas (NAB). Spending the evening with the Bahamian community in Florida made me feel like I was back in Nassau. I reconnected with co-workers that I met in Nassau and I got a chance to meet Consul General Gladys Johnson-Sands and Bahamian artist, Ancient Man. With all of the live music, dancing, mingling and celebrating, I had to remember that I was there to write a release.

For ten years, the Lagrant Foundation has provided scholarships, internships, mentors and career development workshops to help increase the number of minorities in the field of public relations, advertising and marketing. For the short time that I spent at each office, I felt right at home.
