A story to remember

A story about my scholarship award and internship was published to the VT Comm website. I don't know why I did not think of posting this to my blog. Here goes!! In other news this is not the first time that I was in the paper. An article was written about me in the Bahamas Journal. As soon as I got to Nassau last summer, people said they read an article about me and knew who I was. It was not until later that day that my supervisor showed me the article. Even crazier: some guy on facebook that worked at a magazine in NYC said he recognized my face. New York is the largest U.S. market for travelers to the Bahamas, so it made sense that he saw an article on me. Pretty soon the VT Home page will cover a story on Each One Reach One , a mentorship program at VT. Guess who happened to respond to the inquiry and be the subject at the photo shoo? You guessed it, but by no means was I doing this to shine. My e-mail box got flooded from messages from the leaders of EORO asking for people to...

The Agency Match Maker

What is worst: having power and not knowing how to use it; or not having power at all? Don't they both amount to the same thing: unused power? I think the first is worst because the person with power is crippled by the fact that they know what they have and can find no way to put it to use. I'm experiencing yet another soul searching moment as I begin a career in PR. I don't want to sell myself short in any way but I can't help but admit to fear in applying for jobs. Just my luck the nation is experiencing economic challenges making it harder for people to find jobs and even harder for those with jobs to keep them. In light of all the news, I'm not afraid. I'm confident that my experiences demonstrate that I bring value to an organization. Still I'm struggling with the fact that after two internships and solid assistantship positions, which I have taken the lead in, I may have to start out as an intern. To be honest, I'm not thrilled about the fact that ...

Bahama recap

School is back in session and everyone is talking about what they did for the summer. Some students traveled and others completed internships. Thanks to the Lagrant Foundation (TLF), I got the best of both worlds when I was selected to intern with The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism (TBMOT) on the first international internship sponsored by TLF. I have to admit that my work involved covering events at an annual festival, reporting on Independence Day celebrations, a press conference aboard a cruise line and learning more about the islands by hanging out with local Bahamians at block parties, cook outs and beaches. This four-week internship placed me at offices in Nassau, Bahamas and Plantation, FL. While, in Nassau I worked with the news bureau department for TBMOT. My first assignment was to write a release on the Junkanoo Summer Festival, a cultural festival featuring musical performances, cooking demonstrations, tropical drinks, and games for visitors of all ages. Another assignment bro...

E. . . So Addictive/ PR & Diversity

This blogging thing is much easier than I thought. I just learned how to add videos and make a blog list. I think I am on my way. My flight to the Bahamas is one day away. I'm getting excited. My apartment is all packed up. I'm in Stafford, and I'm ready for the 4th of July festivities. So you all can catch up and learn about the Lagrant Foundation , check out this video that they played at the awards reception. You can find it on my video bar. Also check out the Big Tent. As you can see I'm a big proponent for diversity in public relations . I don't know why. Maybe it is a combination of my passion for social causes and me wanting to see more people that look like me succeed. I want to see more people that look like me succeed in this field. It's more than just a black and white thing. Empirical research would show you how practitioners of color are few and far between. Things are getting better but for the trends in PR do not reflect back on to the industry. I...
