Top Notch Thursday & Interview

This week more than ever, I was itching to make moves on my musical career path. I don't talk much about it because I'm developing but aside from singing in church I am taking steps to grow myself as a songwriter. My step one has been to get my material off of paper and into a track. It's been about one month since I liked up with dafingaz and I was getting kind of restless. This morning we got together for our usual studio pow wow and I am even more excited that I am starting this process. Although I can't release anything just yet, be on the look out for more. Let's just say "I'll Do Better" and "I Won't Change A Thing About You" In other news, I completed an interview a few hours ago. I feel like things are on the up and up. I have a question for you fam. Would you take a good opportunity now or wait for an even better opportunity you know you were going to have in the near future? Would you take a definite 50 G's now or a pote...

Hot D@m! Mother Father

Image
I'll leave what I really want to say up to the imagination but I just saw a performance that just messed up my progress as a curse free man. Ok that is an exaggeration, but just like expletives are used when a person does not have the vocabulary to truly express his or her feelings, I'm feeling that way but in a positive fashion. I'm talking about Allen Stone ! Even after being invited to his show I didn't take the time to look up his music. Now that I have experienced this cat I am buying everyone of his albums before I lay my head down to sleep tonight. His voice behind an acoustic is like running water. Then when he has his band it's like the swagger of a 4th of July BBQ with the soul of cornbread and collard greens to go with it. It's really like that. Never have I been to a show by an artist I knew nothing about and left singing every track. The guy is ridiculous. Words can't express the magic that the native of Washington state creates at a show. The...

Magic in the Musiq

Image
This will probably be one of the funnest blogs I've done in a long time. I've been living the life of a Professor, not that it's boring but I have something else to talk about other than work. Last night I went to see my favorite artist perform at Rams Head Live. Watch the videos and you'll know who it is. I tested out taking videos on my new phone. I've got to work something out when it comes to the sound quality because this piece picks up everything. From Aijuswannaseing, Juslisten, Soulstar, Luvanmusiq, to Onmyradio I've been pleased by his consistency. His lyrical style is honest, straightforward, and unique. There is not a producer featured on his projects that don't complement what the Philadelphia native brings to the table. I like singing his songs because they aren't too far out of my vocal range but after seeing him live I was actually surprised. He really showed his vocal range that night. I knew the dude had a high falsetto but this...

Oscah's Vblog is Here

Image
Hopefully you've peeped my earlier blogs on Oscah. Well, gone are the days when I'll tell you about him. Now you can see for yourself. He just released a Vblog and is going to give the world an inside peek at his life as an independent artist, a husband, a student, and an all around foolish guy. When you know him like I know him you will get it. Oh yeah and there will be some great music to go along with it. Follow him on Twitter @iamsoul and make sure you peep the MADSOUL Mixtape Vol 1. That's it for now folks.

Lazy Sunday

The Steelers are going to the Super Bowl. How ya love that! Oscah released his MADSOUL Mixtape Vol 1 available for FREE Download while supplies last. I'm writing my first exam.I saw Marsha Ambrosius at The Park on Friday. Let's start with Marsha. Two nights before the event, I found out that Marsha Ambrosius would be performing live at The Park. There actually was not much to that night. Honestly! The room was so packed that I had to go to the 4th floor to view the band from the balcony. I had a pretty good spot for several reasons. Number one, despite how packed it was, I could still look down and see everything. Secondly I was standing in front of her VIP section where I saw her stuffing her face the whole time. I thought it was funny. It was show time and everyone pushed their way to the front. This is where it got ignorant. We had some really loud chicks push there way in front of me and my crew. We were standing right behind the camera man, giving him enough room to do wh...

Independently Major

Image
So a week ago I found a tweet, or better yet a retweet, by someone who's Twitter name escapes me at the moment, but the retweet was about PJ Morton's new Mixtape Independently Major which available for a free download on his bandcamp page . I love PJ Morton's music and I love free stuff so I did not hesitate to download it. I have barely sunk my teeth into the album but with this artist you can always expect to get something simple, catchy and unique. The album includes autotune infused remakes of 3rd Degree, I Need Your Love and Don't Ever Leave which are found on previous albums. In my opinion I think that including new versions of those tracks serve as a clever way to make the music sound new. However die hard fans that support his shows it almost appears as a sick joke. I prefer the pure unadulterated PJ Morton sound so I hope he does not include any autotune in his upcoming and future projects. Go on and download the mixtape while supplies last but make sure you s...

The Show

Here's a video of our performance at DTS. Ejoy and tell me what you think. Everybody Knows cover from Gordon M. Curry on Vimeo .

Nobody Really Knows

Guess what family? I will be performing at the Dream Talent Show out in Woodbridge, VA on November 6. Here's the story of how that happened. Since I've become a bit more serious about my singing ability, I'm always looking on craigslist for opportunities. I found one stating that there were auditions to participate in a talent show to win $500 and 2 hours of studio time with A2G Music Studios. I actually worked with the owner on a few tracks. Well, I went out to audition and was a little apprehensive because all I saw were elementary and middle school kids competing. I'm thinking to myself, I do not want to compete against a kid. I just think that is unfair for the judges. Adults have had more time to mold their talent. I got the go head from the staff and they encouraged me to audition anyway. I chose to perform Everybody Knows by John Legend since I've been practicing it with my vocal coach. The audition went well and I was given a chance to compete in the sho...

This is how I'm closing out my day. No insight just music. FULL SCREEN The Sounds of VTech / bilal_isthislove_web    Now peep the original.

Are You The One?

In my mind, I think this is very uncommon for a man, but I been in close to 12 weddings since 2005. This time I got a little something extra out of it lol. I did a duet with one of my high school friends at a wedding for another friend from high school as she walked down the aisle. I figured that I'll share that wil you all. In the words of my former professor Dr. Jim A. Kuypers. Love me, hate me, hell you can even laugh at me just don't ignore me.

Hip Hop & Motivation in My Coffee

Image
For the record, I don't drink coffee. It makes your breath stank. Yes, I meant to say stank. I started my week off with a little bit of Hip Hop Harmony at 18th Street Lounge in DC on Sunday night. This was my first visit to that spot and I can say that it is not for everybody, but I was digging the eclectic atmosphere and sheek setting that it offered. I was primarily there because I wanted to check out the indie acts that were performing. Fatso Skinny, who I learned about last week and posted his single on my FB wall, was in the house. Dude is mad versatile. You'll catch the dude spittin' hard one minute and then crooning out smooth vocals the next. He's an all around artist, which I deeply respect. I only caught half of an acapella track that he did. Unfortunately his people dipped before I could cop a disc. Oh well. I'll have to catch dude at his farewell party, which I think is next week. Peep more tracks from him here . On My Knees [the haiku] by Fatso Anot...

Therapy Thursdays

I promise you that DJ 2MUCH and I were working on an event concept that would use this same title. What's funny is that Therapy Thursdays at Indulj hosted by Poet and the Future Band was pretty much a model for the idea we had. Last night, I made it out only off of a suggestion from someone's Twitter Page and now I think I'm in love. It's been a minute since I've found a spot where I could listen to good music from a GOOD band. I know DC is stocked full of them but I'm just now becoming familiar with that scene. So, let's talk about Poet and the Future Band. After seeing someone's status about them performing at Indulj and that the show was FREE , I did a little bit of research and found this article . Of coure I had to find them on Twitter and peep their following to see that it wasn't just some corny local band. Based on the performance, they definitely weren't. The band which consists of Poet(male vocalists), Mickey (female vocalist), a dr...

Shout Outs

There always comes a time in my blog when I celebrete the many creative people in my circle by mentioning some of the projects they have going on. These individuals inspire me to work even harder in my personal endeavors and so I must needs to tell their business to any and everybody else that can possibly support them. First on my list is a producer in the DMV that goes by the name of Marcus "DaFingaz" Manderson who is the founder of an entertainment enterprise named Top Notch Productionz . Big up to my dude for winning a remix competition on Cypher Lounge Radio . It's not too late to listen to and vote for his latest Xzibit remix . Follow this link and submit your e-mail address to boost him up to 1st place. The next person on my list is an author, poet, mother, wife, mentor, activist, etc. who I have had the opportunity to work with in collaboration with U.N.I Clothing Co . She goes by the name Profound Thought and you can hear her thoughts in her personal journa...

More from PJ Morton

Image
Here is a little bit of the footage that I captured of PJ performing I Need Your Love. Enjoy!

PJ Morton @ Liv

Image
I love seeing performers that perform like they absolutely LOVE what they do. Last year I raved about Ryan Leslie but this year I'm raving about PJ Morton. I went to this concert a few months back, but I did not want my readers to miss out on this guy. Here are is a video of him performing How We Were @ Liv Lounge in D.C. I know it's kind of dark in there. Peep the pics from that night as well.

Statistics

Even though I left the concert when I heard him perform at B.B. King's last summer, this new song is alarmingly honest, creative, and when I find the the word I'll be sure to give it to you. Lyfe Jennings Statistics--enjoy.

Just Got Put On

While looking around on various social media outlets this weekend, I came across two artists that I'm geekin' over. The first is a gospel artist from VA by the name of Gavin Davis . He's a pretty sick vocalist and I like his writing style because it's hard to find gospel artists that aren't. . . how do you say..TYPICAL! Listening to the production and writing on his debut single I'll Be Your Minister was what originally made me want to listen to more. Check out his song That Was Enough . I heard it on his myspace and fell in love with the production and the writing. Then there is the world reknown RH Factor, who I'm just finding out about today. Here is the long story about how I found them out. I wanted to see if either Ivan Barias or Carvin Haggins from Karma Productions had any videos I could subscribe to. That is when I came across a video of Carvin Haggins in the studio with Jean Baylor , the light skinned chick that was in the singing duo Zhane. Afte...

April 10

All I'm going to say is that I'm preparing for April 10. I'll be back with more news.
